Santiago Thomas de Carranza is a co-founder of the firm. Practising lawyer. Economist. University Professor. He studied Law at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Economics at the Universidad Schiller International (Bachelor Degree in Economics). Doctoral studies (DEA - Catedra Unesco - Universidad Rey Juan Carlos). After finishing his university studies, he prepared examinations for the Council of State's Legal Service. In 1997 he joined Melchor de las Heras Law Firm as a lawyer, where he was working at the commercial and public law departments. In 2003, he founded the firm Thomás de Carranza Abogados, of which he is currently managing partner.
Santiago has extensive practical experience in the fields of commercial and financial law, as well as in administrative and regulatory law (contentious and advisory) and procedural law.
- In the field of commercial and financial law, he has participated in numerous transactions involving the purchase and sale of companies, investment and divestment, venture capital, as well as in the preparation, negotiation and drafting of contracts, and collaboration agreements between companies of different types. He has also advised on the implementation and development of numerous business, both in Spain and abroad, working regularly with lawyers from different countries and jurisdictions (start-ups; development capital; shareholder agreements; mergers; spin-offs, etc.), and has also participated in the design and implementation of different purchase and sale and financing structures, mainly linked to the real estate and renewable energy sectors, advising his clients both in the preliminary phase of construction, supply and commissioning of the installations and in the financing phase.
- In the area of regulatory administrative law, Santiago has considerable practical experience in both the advisory and procedural fields. He has advised the Ministry of Public Works on the development of the toll motorway programme and its adaptation to new financing techniques, as well as other public bodies and organisations. He has also advised different individuals and private entities in their relations with the Public Administrations in such diverse matters as public contracting, work, service and public domain concessions (water, ports, roads, etc.), sanitary services, postal services, environment, telecommunications, patrimonial responsibility of the Public Administrations, expropriations, urban planning, sports, etc.
- In the field of procedural law, Santiago has more than 20 years of experience, mainly in the field of contentious-administrative jurisdiction and civil and commercial jurisdiction. He has also participated as a lawyer in different arbitration proceedings (both in law and equity). He has been Chairman of the Appeals Committee of the Royal Spanish Equestrian Federation (2008-2010) and is currently Vice-Chairman of the Sports Discipline Committee of that Royal Federation (since 2010). He is also an arbitrator at the AEADE Arbitration Court. Santiago has been repeatedly recommended by the prestigious international directory Best Lawyers as one of the best trial lawyers in the country (since 2013 to date).
- As far as his connection to the university world is concerned, it should only be pointed out that Santiago has been a Professor at the School of Legal Practice of the Complutense University of Madrid since 2000 (contentious-administrative law and civil procedural law); lecturer at the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (lecturer in charge of the subject of Administrative Law I and II since 2001 and lecturer in contentious-administrative law at the Master's for access to the legal profession); and member of the Faculty of Professors and the Academic Council of the Master's Degree in European Union Law at the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Professor of Professional Ethics). He is the author of several studies and doctrinal articles and has had the honour of participating as a speaker in different seminars of a legal nature.
Rafael Truan Blanco
is the partner responsible of the International Department of the firm. A practising lawyer for more than 25 years, he holds a Degree in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid, San Pablo, CEU. He is specialised in company and commercial law and real estate.
During his professional career, he has practiced as a specialist in Spanish Law in London for six years. He is accustomed to work with multidisciplinary and multicultural teams and to manage and coordinate international legal advisors. He has acted as a national and international legal advisor heading the legal department of several Spanish companies, and has a wide experience in international real estate as well as in internationalization of companies. He has advised a number of companies in sectors such as renewables energies, real estate, telecommunications, construction or media in the opening of their markets in countries of America, Europe and in other countries such as India, where he has developed an intense professional activity. He has advised in numerous corporate restructuring cases as well, on behalf of foreign multinationals with presence in our country. He was named leading Spanish lawyer in agency and distribution by the prestigious publication Global Counsel 3000, in the year 2002
Rafael has lectured at City University of London in Urban Planning and Spanish Real Estate Law and in Introduction to Spanish Law at the University of Westminster in London and has participated as a speaker in a good number of conferences of legal organizations and chambers of commerce. He is the author of publications and articles on Spanish Law and foreign investments in Spain.
He has been Chairman of the Management of Law Firms Committee of the Union Internationale des Avocats based in Paris, Director of Publications of the same organization and co-editor of its legal magazine “Juriste International”, as well as Chairman of the Real Estate Committee of the International Bar Association based in London. Rafael is the secretary and treasurer of the “Jane Austen Society España”
Currently he also is, as Head of the International Department, responsible for business development and marketing of the firm.
